COOK FOREST, Pa. — On Saturday, August 30, Cook Forest State Park invites hikers and nature enthusiasts to take part in a rare and rigorous journey through one of the northeast’s most remarkable old-growth forests.
From 2:30 to 5:30 p.m., participants will traverse steep, often off-trail terrain to reach the Seneca and Mohawk hemlocks—the two tallest known eastern hemlocks in Pennsylvania.
These towering trees, some approaching 150 feet in height, are part of a forest where many hemlocks surpass 300 years of age. The hike offers not only a chance to witness these ancient giants up close, but also to learn how experts measure tree height and age, and why these stands are vital to forest ecology and conservation.
Led by park staff, the group will meet at the Cook Forest Park Office before heading into the heart of the hemlock stand. The route is strenuous and not recommended for casual hikers, but those prepared for the challenge will be rewarded with a rare glimpse into one of the finest old-growth ecosystems in the region.
